What to do when going through your spiritual Awakening

What to do when everything changes?

2020 is said to be the year of the Great Awakening. Can you feel it?

We are nearly half-way through this powerful year and it certainly has brought big and sudden life changes for everyone around the world.

The global lockdown because of COVID-19 has asked us to slow down, turn inwards and reflect on our lives. Many old feelings might have come up for you in the last weeks and you might have been doing some deep inner work.

Many of us have also been impacted by external changes in some way - losing a job, struggling to find work in this time, financial uncertainty, worries about your health or your loved ones, or experiencing loneliness and social isolation in this time of physical distancing.

It certainly has been a challenging time on many levels and we have been asked to dig deep and sit with uncomfortable or painful feelings.

But this might be exactly what is needed to wake us up.

Individually and collectively we are going through a time of crisis. But one thing I’ve learned is – a crisis is always an opportunity. An opportunity to grow and change for the better.

Are you going through a Spiritual Awakening?

Except for some people who experience a spontaneous Awakening, for most of us our spiritual Awakening is a process that might take several years.

It is often triggered by an intense personal crisis that makes us reevaluate everything in our life. This could be a health crisis, an accident, a break-up or divorce, or a profound loss. This event might take us into a dark period of grief, depression and confusion – which is called the Dark Night of the Soul.

It is when our soul is calling out to us and we start to reevaluate what really matters in our life. We also realise that we are not in control – no matter how hard we might have tried to control everything in our lives. This is a wake-up call, where we can start to surrender to a higher power and allow ourselves to be guided.

Our heart is broken open – so that the light can come in

In this painful period our heart is broken open. And only through these cracks the light can come in. We might become more humble, more compassionate or loving with others and ourselves.

While in Western culture something that is broken is often disregarded, in Japanese culture there is the beautiful art of golden repair Kintsugi.

A broken piece of ceramics is fixed and the cracks are painted with gold. In this understanding the object becomes more valuable and unique because it has a history. The imperfections and scars are celebrated. Such a beautiful philosophy, right?

Our struggles, our vulnerability and the lessons we’ve learned along the way – they are what make us more beautiful and more human.

8 Steps to support yourself when going through big life changes:

  1. Don’t resist
The more you resist the changes you are experiencing, the more you will suffer. Try your best to find acceptance with your new situation. Even if it feels painful and confusing - this is happening for a reason. Imagine that life is preparing you in this way for who you are becoming.

  2. Let go
Do your best to find completion in whichever way you need to. Release your attachments to how life used to be. Embrace that the only constant in life is change.

  3. Surrender
Learn to give up control and allow yourself to be guided by a higher intelligence. This takes great strength and is a major step in our spiritual growth. Try to understand what this is teaching you.

  4. Trust
Even if you don’t understand. Even if it doesn’t make any sense. Know that the universe works in mysterious ways. Trust that whatever is happening is for your highest good. Ask to be guided so you can start to follow the signs to truly live your purpose.

  5. Don’t abandon yourself
Sometimes when we are experiencing loss and going through a painful experience like a break-up or losing a job our confidence can take a hit. You might start feeling as if you’re not worthy of it, as if you don’t deserve it.

Notice when you have these kind of thoughts and know: they are not true. You are worthy and you do deserve the life you dream of. No matter what happened.

So look after yourself, take care of yourself, practice self-love. Know that you are the most important resource you have. Support yourself to come back out on the other side.

  6. Get support
Know that you don’t have to struggle and move through this difficult time alone. Allow yourself to receive support. This might be in the form of counselling, energy healing or life coaching. There are professionals out there who know how to support you through this vulnerable time of change. Give yourself permission to be supported.

  7. Stay connected
Sometimes when we don’t feel at our best we might not feel like sharing or being social. Make sure you reach out to your friends and people close to you. The invitation is to open up, even if it feels vulnerable and scary. Allow yourself to be seen and heard in a loving space, even if you don’t feel at your best. This is a profoundly healing experience.

Know that we all struggle, we all experience challenges and feel emotions – it is simply part of this beautiful, crazy, sometimes messy experience of being human.

  8. Find community
Have you been feeling as if nobody understands you? Maybe your friends, colleagues or family can’t relate to the new person you are becoming.

Especially when we are going through the time of spiritual Awakening, we are changing on such a profound level. You might not have the same interests any more. Instead of going out to a party and having some drinks you now want to get up early for your morning practice. You might stop drinking alcohol, eating meat or watching TV during the time of your Awakening. These are very normal and common responses when we start becoming more conscious of how we live our life.

This time can feel lonely and isolating. You might be trying to fit in and there’s no way, as your lifestyle and values simply don’t match anymore with many people in your life. This can feel sad and unsettling.

That’s why in this time of Awakening it is really important to start connecting with like-minded people who are also on the spiritual path. You will notice that you have a lot in common. And no, you’re not the only one who follows the moon or loves chanting mantras. You just need to find the right people and start developing new friendships.

This is one of the reasons I founded Moon Tribe - to connect and celebrate our conscious community! Together we are stronger and we can share and support each other on the spiritual path.

I hope you find this helpful as we are moving through these intense times. 2020 is a year of massive transformation. Let’s support ourselves through it to become the best version of ourselves!
