Why it’s not enough to practice yoga on your mat – we need to live it

I've always had friends and partners from so many different cultures and backgrounds and it has deeply enriched my life.

Last night I felt a heavy heart.

And even though, as you might know, I don't follow news and politics I feel called to make a statement.

These are intense times and we are walking through the mud. Much of what has been collectively suppressed is coming up to the surface.

Is it uncomfortable and painful? Yes.
Is it much needed? Yes.

And as the protest and worldwide rise of the Black Lives Matter movement show: we are ready for a change. Things can't go on like this... right?

I spoke with a friend of mine last night who shared he had experienced racism many times in his life. The worst part were the subtle things – the tone, the looks – that you can't really react to but that are affecting you.

As a woman I have experienced discrimination myself in the corporate world. I’ve experienced the ‘glass ceiling’ and not being given opportunities even though I was smart, talented and ready to work hard. But I can only start to imagine how being exposed to racism throughout your life must affect you.

I am ready to listen now.

I am ready to learn from my brothers and sisters who had to experience this.

I am ready to do what I can in my own life and show SOLIDARITY.

I know it can feel daunting. But it's time for us to wake up.

Priviledge is receiving unearned advantage from power structures of inequality.

Imagine all the guilt, shame and resentment about racism that we are carrying on a global collective level. It's so heavy and such a low vibration.

Let's use this opportunity in this powerful time of change to finally clear this and do the work that's needed. Each one of us in our own life.

This is Karma yoga – yoga in action

Karma yoga is the spiritual practice of selfless action performed for the benefit of others. To a karma yogi right action is a form of prayer.

The Bhagavad Gita, one of the most important teachings in the yoga tradition, states that selfless service to the right cause with the right feeling and right attitude is a form of worship and purifies the mind. The powerful life of Mahatma Gandhi was deeply inspired by these teachings.

As the Gita teaches: We cannot avoid to act – as not acting is a form of action and has consequences and a karmic impact.

Your work is your responsibility,
not its result.
Never let the fruits of your actions
be your motive.
Nor give in to inaction.

Set firmly in yourself, do your work,
not attached to anything.
Remain evenminded in success,
and in failure.
Evenmindedness is true yoga.

Be the change you wish to see in the world

Let's co-create the world we want to live in. And yes, your voice and actions matter.

2020 is a year of Awakening.
A time to go beyond our differences and all separation and realise that we are ONE.

I hope this gives you some perspective and support in these intense times. I would love to hear your thoughts and insights in the comments!

Much love,

Simona
